Skardu to Thalay Broq (Jeep Drive)
Drive: approx. 3.5–4 hours
- The journey begins from Skardu, passing through lush green villages, streams, and scenic mountain landscapes.
- Thalay Broq is a high-altitude pastureland known for its alpine flowers, yak herds, and peaceful environment.
- You'll experience local Balti culture and traditional shepherd life amidst stunning natural beauty.
Overnight: Camping at Thalay Broq

Thalay Broq to Thalay La Pass (4,572 m) and Descent to Shingkang Camp
Trekking time: 6–7 hours
- Start early to ascend toward the Thalay La Pass, the highest point of the trek.
- From the top, enjoy breathtaking views of the Karakoram mountain range.
- After spending some time at the pass, descend carefully toward Shingkang Camp.
Overnight: Camping at Shingkang
03Day 3
Day 3
Shingkang Camp to Shigar Valley (Trek + Jeep Drive)
Trek: 3–4 hours · Drive: 1–2 hours
- Trek through streams, alpine meadows, and glaciers to reach the road head.
- From here, a jeep will take you to Shigar town or back to Skardu.
Overnight: End of journey
Note: This trek can also be completed in 3 days if you're fit and the weather conditions are favorable.

History of The Trek
The Thalay La Trek follows an ancient trade route connecting two historic kingdoms in Baltistan, Khaplu and Shigar.
Royal Highway
For centuries, it served as a vital pass for royal messengers and traders traveling between the Yabgo Dynasty in Khaplu and the rulers of Shigar.
British Strategic Route
During the British Raj (1891–1947), colonial surveyors heavily utilized the pass. Because it is non-glaciated and surrounded by fertile alpine meadows, it provided ideal grazing and safe passage for their pack animals.
Modern Tourism
Its role as a commercial highway ended in 1985 when modern jeep roads were built. Today, the ancient trail has been reborn as a scenic eco-tourism trekking route used by local shepherds and international hikers.
