History of The Trek

The Shila Pass trail wasn't built for tourism — it evolved through three historical eras: ancient herder paths, a 19th-century Dogra-era military and trade route, and, since the 1960s, a modern trekking route.

Ancient Herder Paths

Indigenous Balti pastoralists originally carved the route, using Shila Pass to drive yaks to the Deosai Plains (Ghbiarsa, or "Summer's Place") for seasonal grazing.

19th-Century Strategic Route

During the Dogra Dynasty, these high passes served as vital communication and trade shortcuts, with royal messengers bypassing dangerous river gorges to move mail and supplies to Skardu.

"Land of Giants" Folklore

Local oral history named the plateau Dev-Vasai ("Land of Giants"), believing only supernatural beings could survive its brutal, sudden blizzards.

Modern Exploration (1960s)

Western explorers mapped the rim in search of panoramic views of K2 and Nanga Parbat, turning an ancient herding trail into a world-class wilderness trek.

I only had a few days to spare and the itinerary was planned around that perfectly. Transport, camps, and permits were all sorted before we even arrived in Skardu.

The trek was tougher than I expected in the best way. Solid campsites, a guide who checked in on everyone, and views that made the climb worth it.
