Winter Equipment to Buy in December

December is the smartest time to shop for trekking gear — well before the summer season opens. Here's what to prioritize for high-altitude comfort.

December, well before the summer trekking season opens, is actually the smartest time to shop for gear. Off-season sales are common, and you'll have months to break in boots and test your kit before heading into the mountains around Skardu.

Start with your base layer system — moisture-wicking thermals form the foundation of staying warm without overheating on the trail. Pair them with a mid-layer fleece or light insulated jacket, and a windproof, ideally waterproof, outer shell for camp mornings and unpredictable weather at altitude.

A sleeping bag rated well below the temperatures you expect is worth the investment; nights at high-altitude camps like Thalay Broq or Deosai Top regularly drop near freezing even in summer. Insulated, waterproof boots with good ankle support and a couple of pairs of quality wool socks round out the essentials.

Don't overlook the small items — a headlamp, a reliable water bottle or bladder, sun protection, and a basic first-aid kit all take up little space but matter enormously once you're on the trail. Buying and testing this gear now means one less thing to worry about when trekking season arrives.
